Job Summary:
The Center for Oldest Ice Exploration in the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a part-time or full-time (.50 FTE-1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research Assistant: Ice Core Lab Technical Staff position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.
This position will work in the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and Center for Oldest Ice Exploration (COLDEX; www.coldex.org) to help build a new analytical system to measure carbon dioxide in ice cores, and apply the methods to decipher the history of atmospheric CO2 from very old ice core samples (up to 4 Ma and possibly older) from stratigraphically complex ice margin sites in Antarctica.

Key Responsibilities
Design and construct a system for sublimating ice in a vacuum using IR laser or other source, interfaced with a gas chromatograph for CO2 analysis in ice cores (40%),
including creating CAD documents for machinists, developing electronic controls (software and possibly hardware), and automating electronic and mechanical controls. An alternative approach using an automated in vacuum sublimation system may be implemented.
Acquire needed components, oversee fabrication of parts (20%)
Test system, document system operation, analyze and interpret data produced by system. Make conclusions about system performance, changes in design or operating parameters, and results from sample analysis, Publish professional papers describing system performance and scientific results. Work with the supervisor to ensure research findings are available and accessible to the public. (30%)
Work collaboratively with other research team members to ensure an environment that is safe, respectful and inclusive. Other duties as assigned (10%).
What You Will Need
• Bachelor’s degree in physical sciences or engineering.
• Experience with mechanical and electronic control systems and/or automation.
• Experience or training for designing parts for precision machining.
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills demonstrated by previous work, and ability to clearly communicate scientific concepts, findings, and results for diverse audiences.
• Ability or potential to workeffectively in a diverse research group.
• Excellent mechanical skills and experience with hand and shop tools.
What We Would Like You to Have
• Advanced degree in physical sciences or engineering (MS or PhD) or at least two years of post-bachelor’s degree relevant work experience.
• Experience designing parts for precision machining demonstrated by previous work.
• Experience in analytical chemistry or geochemistry.
• Experience with optics and lasers.
• Experience with vacuum systems.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
May require work in walk in freezer for up to 30 minutes at a time.
